At the Danish school, Skolen ved Nordens Plads, eleven-year-old Yusuf can attend school and participate in social activities by using the telepresence robot, Beam. Using a robot gives him an opportunity to maintain relationships with his classmates even though he has to stay home due to an illness.
“Hi Yusuf, great you could be here”, says one of the teachers when Yusuf drives into the classroom using the telepresence robot, Beam.
Yusuf is eleven years old and is suffering from a long-term illness which means he cannot go to school. Normally, he would have been educated privately a few days a week by a teacher from the school in order to keep up with his classmates. Luckily, the Danish school, Skolen ved Nordens Plads, has provided a telepresence robot that can help Yusuf to still attend classes and interact with classmates.
For Yusuf, it is important that he is still able to see his friends at school and participate in social activities even though he has to stay home. With the Beam, he can make sure that he does not miss out on classes or social activities in the playtime between classes.
He controls the robot via his computer from home and this way he is able to navigate around the school. By using Beam, he is able to both hear and see what is going on at school. Likewise, the other students at the school can see and talk to Yusuf, as long as he is sitting in front of his computer.
The teachers at Skolen ved Nordens Plads see the benefits of using robotics technology in an educational setting because it gives students like Yusuf an opportunity to maintain schooling and friendships regardless the illness or other circumstances. Moreover, the teachers are able to focus on the classes as a whole.
